The Hanhart 417 ES 1954 was preceded by a similar model from Hanhart known as the 417 ES. The differences are minor and, from what I can tell, are limited to the size of the case. When we reissued the legendary 417 ES two years ago in a 42 mm stainless steel case, it marked the beginning of a great success story for Hanhart. Earlier this year, we released an additional version — the 417 ES 1954 — which, with its 39 mm case, e size as the historical watch dwelling in our museum.

Hanhart is a German manufacturer that specialized in producing chronographs for the German Air Force, including the Luftwaffe in World War II through the West German Air Force in the 1950s. The Hanhart 417 is a relatively rare watch. It is estimated that only 500 were made in either pure stainless steel (reference 417ES) or chromed brass.

The 417 ES is a piece of living Hanhart tradition. Its fluted bezel rotates smoothly in both directions and its red position markings are reminiscent of the original from the 1950s. The numbers and lettering of the dial in the characteristic bicompax layout as well as the symmetrical button arrangement were also taken from the historical model.

Taking inspiration from the past, Hanhart has recreated the 417 ES, but this one is not the exact same as 1954, beyond just modern material upgrades and of course the movement. A noticeable evolution compared to the WWII-era timepieces is that the 417 ES was equipped with pencil-shaped hands in place of cathedral hands. The historic bi-compax chronograph layout of the Hanhart Pioneer 417 ES 1954 Chronograph features a 30 minute register at 3 and small seconds at 9. In keeping with the original design of the 1954 model, Hanhart has chosen to use the vintage Hanhart logo on the dial, crown and buckle. There are four primary differences between the current 42 mm.

The three piece case with very sleek, long horns as lugs, is robust and well built. The case back is also in stainless steel and is a screw down type.
