The historic King's Cave is one of the several locations in which Robert the Bruce was said to have had his famous encounter with a spider, which (so legend has it) encouraged him to carry on his fight for Scotland. It can be reached from Blackwaterfoot where you can walk along the beach and through the boulder-field path. This is part of Arran.

The caves were formed around 10,000 to 6,000 years ago during an ice age when the weight of an advancing glacier forced the land downward, so the sea was higher relative to the location of the cave.

The walk starts from a signed forestry car park 3km north of Blackwaterfoot. Begin by heading along the path from the right hand corner, past the sign. It passes the site of a hut circle and then soon emerges from the trees to run along the northern boundary of the forest, rewarded with views of the Pirnmill Hills, and across the Kilbrannan.
